PPP (D) published the results of a new poll. In this poll, respondents from West Virginia were asked for whom they will vote: Republican Donald Trump or Democrat Hillary Clinton.
PPP (D) poll results
Of those who responded, 30.0% said that they intend to vote for former First Lady Hillary Clinton, while 57.0% said that they would give their vote to billionaire Donald Trump.
The poll was conducted from April 29 to May 1. A total of 1201 likely voters responded. The error margin is +/-2.8 percentage points. This means that the poll results for Trump and Clinton differ significantly.
Putting the results in context
Individual polls often contain large biases, which is why they should be treated with caution. Rather than trusting the results from single polls, forecasting research recommends to use combined polls or, even better, a combined forecast that relies on forecasts from different methods, each of which draws upon different data.
In order to make the results comparable to benchmark forecasts, you can translate them into shares of the two-party vote. The resulting figures are 34.5% for Clinton and 65.5% for Trump.
Results compared to the combined PollyVote forecast
The current PollyVote predicts Trump to gain 61.9% of the two-party vote in West Virginia. That is, the PollyVote forecast is 3.6 points below his polling numbers. Again, a look at the poll's error margin suggests that this deviation is significant.
